The Reality Behind This Trip

The Numbers
Don’t Lie

First responders carry an invisible weight the public rarely sees. These statistics are why this trip exists — and why Mental Health Awareness Month matters so deeply for the people who serve us.

85%of first responders report symptoms related to a mental health conditionRelief Mental Health / SAMHSA
30%develop behavioral health conditions including depression & PTSD — vs. 20% of the general publicU.S. Dept. of Health & Human Services / SAMHSA Help for Heroes
5×more likely to suffer PTSD & depression than civilian counterpartsBeyond the Storm / Peer-reviewed research
47%of U.S. firefighters have considered suicide at some point in their careerSurvey of 1,000+ U.S. firefighters
117%greater likelihood of suicidal thoughts among officers who report job burnoutRelief Mental Health / Police officer studies
53%of first responders reported depression symptoms in a 2024 New York State assessment2024 New York State First Responder Assessment
⚠️

More firefighters and police officers die by suicide each year than in the line of duty. Over 50% of firefighter deaths are attributed to stress and extreme exhaustion — not fires. The crisis is real, it is urgent, and it is why this trip exists.

Voices from the Community

What They Said

“The ocean doesn’t care what rank you are. It just holds you. That’s what I needed more than anything after 14 years on the job.”

Sarah M.Firefighter · Program Participant

“I didn’t know I was burned out until I felt what rest actually felt like. This changed how I think about my own mental health.”

James R.Police Officer · Program Participant

“Knowing I’m not alone — that other first responders get it — that’s been the biggest help of all.”

David K.Paramedic · Program Participant
